There are two big reasons to come to the November IARS meeting on Tuesday 8 November:

1. The judging of entries for the crystal radio set competition. The rules are here.

2. The annual IARS auction will also be held. The Auction Rules of engagement:

Please no junk. If you bring it, and it doesn’t get sold, you take it home. Anything found left at the end of the night will be disposed of at our discretion. Please don’t complain you didn’t know.

All goods for auction to be booked in by 7.00pm, no exceptions to this rule. The meeting will begin at 7.30pm sharp.

10% of all sales to go to the IARS to help keep our club going, unless kindly donated to the club which will then attract 100% of the takings. John 2KEJ will organize settling this after the auction has closed and things have settled down. It does take time to work the totals out. Rest assured Simon knows what he is doing and he knows the rough value of all goods.

Status of equipment to be the seller’s responsibility. If it doesn’t work make it known as any argument’s after the sale will be between yourself and the buyer, it has nothing to do with the IARS.

All transmitting equipment should only be sold to those known to, or can prove that they have an amateur license, or they can convince us they are studying for it and their license issue, is inevitable. This of course does not apply to non transmitting items such as cable, components, accessories, receivers etc.

The meeting is at the usual venue: Industry World, Coniston.

It should be a great night. See you there!

The intended outcome of the NSW planning review, which is now in progress, is that local councils will have uniform guidelines in place for the majority of applications before them for approval. One aspect that would be beneficial to radio amateurs is to have in place a regulation permitting the erection of towers and structures without having to submit development applications.

The WIA has suggested that this is an opportunity for NSW amateurs to have input to the review and hopefully achieve an outcome of an easy approval for their tower requirements. The more submissions the review receives recommending this the more likely the desired outcome would be achieved.

The IARS committee recommends all NSW amateurs make individual submissions to the planning review. This is fairly easy to do, for example, it can be done by email.

Submissions to the review close on Friday 4 November.

For more information, including guidance for making a submission, see the WIA news release.

During WW2, while working on a wavemeter project a “Dr Trevor Wadley” developed a unique circuit for canceling frequency drift, a circuit later to be known as the Wadley Loop. The first well known implementation of Wadley’s Loop was during the 1950′s in the development of the Racal RA-17 receiver. The RA-17 and later RA-117 where quite unique devices, gaining extensive use by the British military from the late 1950′s and through the 60′s, in fact the 117 made it into the early 70′s. The circuit was well known to the Amateur radio fraternity during this era, with top shelf amateur receivers such as Yaesu (FRG-7), Drake (SSR-1) and Realistic (DX-300) receivers employing this circuit idea.

The Illawarra Amateur Radio Society currently has a construction competition running. Entry is open to IARS club members and other amateur radio operators within VK. There will be prizes awarded in

both categories.

Entry is easy, just build a crystal set. Judging will be based on some simple rules:-

The crystal set must work ie receive a transmitted signal.

The crystal set can receive either commercial, broadcast or amateur signals.

No external power other than the received signal can be used.

Additional points will be gained by utilizing recycled parts, or home made components.

Additional points will be gained for Innovative design, and unique concepts.

The finished article does not need to be ascetically pleasing.

Testing will be carried out at Industry World Centre, Wollongong 8/11/2011 (Between 19:30 – 22:00 Hrs).

The judges decision will be final.

The judging of the contest will be at the IARS November meeting. The Crystal set will need to be bought to the meeting on this evening, alternatively they can be posted to the Secretary Illawarra amateur radio society, by the meeting date which is 8th November 2011. Correct postage and packaging cost must be included if you require the project to be returned after the competition. note that this project is a receive only construction, so it is therefore open to all license classes in VK.

Why not put together a club entry?

Old hands, why not take a newer member of the hobby under your wing and show then how construction was done when you first discovered radio.

Results and awards will be presented at the December 2011 meeting.

Ahoy there land lovers. Standby at the gangway ready to go ashore to Point Perpendicular for the International Lighthouse and lightship weekend for 2011.
This year the international lighthouse and lightship weekend will fall on the 20th and 21st august. Once again the Illawarra Amateur Radio Society will be teaming up with the hard working volunteers from Lighthouses of Australia to man the light at Jervis Bay. A radio room operating on all bands from 23cm to 160m will be set up in one of the light house keeps residences.

Just before dusk on Friday 19th August the solar lighthouse will be switched off and the old prestigious light will once again warn ships of the dangers along the coast line of Jervis Bay. The point perpendicular lighthouse is situated on the headlands adjacent to Bowen Island at Point Perpendicular. The light that sits 95Metres above sea level was constructed in the late 1890′s after the nearby Cape St George lighthouse was decommissioned due to it’s poor location.

Members of the Illawarra Amateur Radio Society who wish to participate in this event should attend the July meeting 12th July, or email their intentions to the secretary IARS.

Update: Emails have been sent to all participants detailing the requirements and rules for attendance at this years event. If you registered for the event and haven’t received your email please contact the secretary ASAP by email on vk2vvv
