Ahoy there land lovers. Standby at the gangway ready to go ashore to Point Perpendicular for the International Lighthouse and lightship weekend for 2011.
This year the international lighthouse and lightship weekend will fall on the 20th and 21st august. Once again the Illawarra Amateur Radio Society will be teaming up with the hard working volunteers from Lighthouses of Australia to man the light at Jervis Bay. A radio room operating on all bands from 23cm to 160m will be set up in one of the light house keeps residences.
Just before dusk on Friday 19th August the solar lighthouse will be switched off and the old prestigious light will once again warn ships of the dangers along the coast line of Jervis Bay. The point perpendicular lighthouse is situated on the headlands adjacent to Bowen Island at Point Perpendicular. The light that sits 95Metres above sea level was constructed in the late 1890′s after the nearby Cape St George lighthouse was decommissioned due to it’s poor location.
Members of the Illawarra Amateur Radio Society who wish to participate in this event should attend the July meeting 12th July, or email their intentions to the secretary IARS.
Update: Emails have been sent to all participants detailing the requirements and rules for attendance at this years event. If you registered for the event and haven’t received your email please contact the secretary ASAP by email on vk2vvv
